Ghost Stories - The little girl and the ghostly golfer

In the spirit of Halloween, Laurie of Indulge Your Shelf has put together a spooky blog event, Phantom Friday. As soon as I found out the event was all about ghost stories I knew I just had to play along.

I, personally, have never encountered any ghosts or ghost like activity, but my sister claims to have been visited by a ghost when we were kids.

Here is how the story goes. . .

My grandparents lived in Orlando, which was about 3 hours from where I grew up, so I used to visit them several times a year. When I would stay with them, my sister and I would sleep on the sofa bed in the living room. Across from the sofa bed were two lazy boy type chairs, a table, and a lamp.

One night, while my sister and I were asleep on the sofa bed, my sister woke up and felt someone staring at her. She looked around the room and sitting with his legs crossed on the arm of one of the lazy boy chairs was a man. At first she thought it might be my dad, uncle, or grandfather, but after her eyes adjusted to the dark room she realized she didn't recognize the man at all. He was dressed in old time, green golf clothes, green socks, and a green hat with a pom pom on the top.

She immediately turned to try to wake me up, but said the ghostly golfer must have put me in a ghost trance because no matter how hard she tried I would not wake up.

After trying unsuccessfully to wake me up, she threw the covers over her head and hid from the man. A few minutes later, she lifted the covers to try and wake me again but the man was gone!

In the morning, she told my parents the story of the golfer. They, of course, thought she had made up the story and dismissed it as a dream or a child's overactive imagination. But several years later we found out that my grandmother had also been visited by a ghost in the living room of her house. Though it wasn't the golfer, it was an American Indian.

Was my grandparent's house haunted? Maybe. Unfortunately, my grandmother died a few years later and the house was sold. I often wonder if the new owners of the house have had any ghostly encounters. Maybe they too have had a visit from the ghostly golfer.

Thanks, Laurie for putting together such a fun event. If you want to read some more ghost stories, visit Phantom Friday.

Happy Halloween!!!

Happy Halloween

I know I've been MIA lately. I have been battling some health issues, and am praying that they will be taken care of by the time November rolls around.

Having said that, I'm going to continue to take a break from blogging and crafting for the rest of the month. I hope to be back and feeling great in time to decorate and celebrate for Thanksgiving.

Daphne, Drusilla, and I wish everyone a fun and safe Halloween.

Halloween collage made with Picnic and Flickr.

We'll be spending the day celebrating Drusilla's sixth birthday with some Mylar toys and kitty Party Mix!

P-A-R-T-Y!!!

Whoo is ready for Halloween?

Now that the calendar has turned to October and Drusilla is feeling better (thanks for all of the well wishes), I have turned the switch to hyper mode to finish up my Halloween decorations.

I have several projects in the works, but here are the two that I have completed, thus far:

feathered wreath

easy Halloween banner

Both projects were super, super easy to make. The felt banner looks great hanging in my entry way. The wreath was supposed to hang on my front door, but then I remembered my door is black! So, I made a smaller wreath to hang over my mantle. It looks pretty spooky!

If you look at my project list, you'll see that I have quite a few projects to go. The good news is most of them are pretty easy. But, I'll keep plugging along and will, hopefully, have another finished project (or two) to post next week.

How about you? Have you finished your Halloween decorations?

Drusilla's week

I had a pretty big scare this week. If you follow me on Facebook you know that my baby girl, Drusilla, has been very sick. What started out as an upset stomach turned into a life threatening problem.

It started on Saturday night with a little upset stomach, but quickly turned very bad. By Monday morning she was unable to keep anything in her stomach, had stopped eating, dropped a pound, and had become very dehydrated. At first I thought she had eaten a piece of my yarn or embroidery thread and it had gotten wrapped around her intestines, but after several x-rays, blood work, and other various tests it looked more likely that she had been poisoned.

Drusilla had to have her neck shaved for her IV. Poor little girl. (Sorry for the blurry pic. Drusilla kept moving around so I would rub her head.)

I do not keep anything in my house that could potentially poison cats, no living plants, chocolate, coffee. . . I wracked my brain trying to think how this could have happened, and then I remembered I had done yard work Saturday afternoon. I have deduced that I must have stepped in either rat poison, fire ant pellets, or bug spray from my neighbor's yard and carried it inside on the bottom of my shoes.

I think the only thing that saved her life was that we had rain the night before and the grass was wet. Whatever I brought in was diluted enough that it just made her very sick, but it didn't cause her seizures or damage her organs.

I never in a million years would have ever thought this could happen, especially in my cat proof house, but I thought I'd share this with all of you, especially those of you who have indoor pets. We try to keep our animals sheltered from the outside, but in this case, the outside still made its way inside. From now on when I cut the grass I will be kicking off my shoes before walking in the house. I will also make a point of washing my hands before touching either one of the girls or any of their toys, bowls, etc.

If you are interested in finding information on potential poisons in and around your home, the ASPCA has a great page full of information. You can find it here. You can also request a free poison control magnet, here. I have already ordered mine. I hope I will never have to use it!

The good news is Drusilla is getting better every day. She is eating and drinking again and even played a little with Daphne last night. I am so happy! And Daphne has been a great little sister, laying beside Drusilla and licking her head. Such good girls!!!
