Super cute '80s craft project
Dot from Dabbled has joined in the craft-a-long with a totally '80s craft tutorial, Shrinky Dinks friendship bracelets!

I wasn't clever enough to use Shrinky Dinks as bracelets. I used to make my friendship bracelets out of embroidery thread and weave them together, like this:

But this project is way cooler!
I've been having a hard time trying to find shrink plastic in my local craft stores, maybe I'm just looking in the wrong section of the store, but as soon as I find some I am going to give this project a try.
Riding on the Metro
As you probably have guessed by now, my '80s experience was all about the music and music videos. MTV was such an enormous part of my childhood, it just pains me to see what the station has become.

I guess times really have changed and YouTube is where everyone goes to look at "retro" music videos now, at least that is where I go. I use the term "retro" because I was flipping through the radio stations the other day and came across an "oldies" station. I immediately thought I would hear Motown or something like that, but instead heard, "Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel. Then it hit me, my favorite music is now considered "oldies". No, I'll keep calling it "retro". It sounds better that way!
Anyway, one of my first memories of MTV was seeing Terri Nunn of Berlin. I absolutely love her voice, and her blond hair with black streaks was super cool! I think a lot of people associate Berlin with "Take My Breath Away" from Top Gun, but their new wave songs are so much better, like "The Metro". Gosh, I love that song and video.
Well, I knew I had to make an '80s craft involving Berlin in some way. So, I went with the Paris Metro sign, which is what their song is named after. I thought it would make a cute pencil/pen topper.

I made it out of two pipe cleaners. I think it is kind of metroish. :)
And here is the song and video that inspired my craft, along with "No More Words" and Terri's super cool hairdo! Long live the '80s music videos!

Janey Glenn earrings tutorial
As promised, here is my second and favorite set of all of my '80s earrings, the "Janey Glenn" earrings. I fashioned them after one of my absolutely favorite movies of all time, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, and the character Janey Glenn (played by a very young Sarah Jessica Parker).
In the final scene, when she and her boyfriend/dance partner Jeff are trying to win a spot on Dance TV, Janey is wearing a peachy-pink and white dance outfit that I have always loved. (Spoiler alert: If you haven't seen the movie and want to be surprised at the ending, don't watch the clip!)
Isn't it great? Totally '80s! Oh I just love this movie. I think I'll have to watch it again tonight for the 500th time. :)
Would you like to make your own set of "Janey Glenn" earrings? Well, here is how you do it:
Materials
2 white round vintage plastic round hoops (32 mm across)
2 peach or pink lucite beads (11 mm across)
2 gold plated hook earwires
2 gold plated long headpins
2 gold plated jump rings (8 mm)
wire cutters
round nose pliers
needle nose pliers
Materials can be found at your local craft store or on Etsy.
Instructions
1. String peach/pink bead onto headpin. Using wire cutters, clip headpin to 1 centimeter above bead.
2. Hold the head pin in the round-nose pliers with one hand. Using the other hand, take the needle-nose pliers and bend the wire to form a small loop.
3. Using the round nose pliers, open the jump ring and string the peach/pink bead onto the jump ring.
4. Slide the top/thin part of the white hoop onto the jump ring.
5. String earwire onto jump ring. With round nose pliers, squeeze the jump ring until it is closed tight.

That's it! Now girls, turn on Dance TV and have some fun these earrings!

Where are they now? - Alyssa Milano
There has always been something I have liked about Alyssa Milano, not that she is an '80s icon and is my age, but I have now figured out what it is, she is a huge sports fan!
A few weeks ago I was flipping through the TV stations and saw Alyssa Milano. I figured she would be talking about her latest movie or TV show, but instead she was talking about her new clothing line. I immediately thought, "Here we go again", with these celebrities and their clothing lines. But Alyssa's is totally different and totally awesome. She is designing clothes for women sports fans.
She is an LA fan so she showed mostly Dodgers and Raiders items, but the items are really cute and pretty affordable ($29.99-$89.99), as far as celebrity designer clothes go.
Here are some of the items she has available:
And anyone who offers Pittsburgh Pirates items is alright in my book!
All teams are not available in every style yet, but there are items for MLB, NBA, NCAA, NFL, and NHL, so fans of all sports will be able to find something super cute to wear to show your team pride.
If you'd like to see Alyssa's items you can do so online at Sports Authority, MLB.com, NFL.com, Amazon.com, and Dick's Sporting Goods.

Do I really need this?
I saw this really funny activity over on The Spotted Sparrow. You just type in "(your name) needs" in the Google search bar and see what it comes up with.
So apparently Missie needs. . .
- to take a break
- to board the blog ship that is hovering overhead
- lots of guidance
- a roof
- lots of hydration
- to plug the holes
- to get on board with her new body
- a TV show to meet a nice single dad who wants to get married
- a cigarette every morning when she gets up in order to get going
- to pee, bad
and my favorite. . .
- her meds!
That was too funny! Give it a try and see what your name needs.

Yep, I was a Girl Scout
February is great for one thing. . . Girl Scout cookies!

As a former Girl Scout, I really take pity on the poor girls who have to beg people to buy their cookies. I always hated cookie season, because back in the '80s we had to sell the cookies door to door. Ugh! It was awful! Now, the girls stand outside a store and get a crack at you twice, once going in the store and once coming out of the store.
Thank goodness my neighbors took pity on me and bought some of my cookies, because I am not a great saleswoman (I even had trouble knocking on doors and asking people for candy on Halloween). I probably would have only sold the boxes my family ate if it were not for my neighbors. So, a very special thank you to the Dorseys, Fergusons, and everyone else on my street. Your kindness was much appreciated!
When I think back to my days in the Girl Scouts, the one thing I always remember are my badges. I might not have had a ton, like the troop leader's daughter did, but I had my fare share.
Most of mine were ones you'd expect me to have like: music, art, wildlife. But then there is one that for the life of me I still can't figure out how I got. . . the math whiz badge.
Now, for someone who is the farthest thing from a math whiz, getting the math whiz badge is mind boggling. The only logical reason I could see for me getting this badge was that my mother, who was co-leader, pulled some strings and got it for me to boost my confidence in math, because I know it wasn't because of my math skills!
I would have gladly traded my math whiz badge for this one.

I don't think we had this caving badge when I was a kid, maybe because I grew up in Florida and there aren't any caves there. Oh well, the bat is still super cute!
So, in honor of Girl Scout cookie season and my years in the Girl Scouts, I have replicated my math whiz badge out of felt.

I updated my triangle guy by giving him a worried look and adding some drops of sweat coming from under his cap, because that is how this math whiz feels when doing math!

Lost '80s Item
One of the quirkiest and strangest movies of the '80s was Little Shop of Horrors. I loved it, of course, especially the soundtrack. I would sing along to "Skid Row"and "Somewhere That's Green" in my bedroom while feeding coins into my Audrey II bank.

Did anyone else have one of these? It was super cool. I'd put the coin on Audrey II's lips and she'd eat the coin and then burp. Ha, it was too funny.
Man, do I wish I still had mine. When I was looking around the internet for a picture I saw it is now worth $90.00! Now that's a lot of coins.

Nothin' But A Good Time!
During the mid to late '80s I became a huge fan of the hairbands. I mean, I loved them all: Whitesnake, Cinderella, Bon Jovi, Dokken. . . I could go on and on, but the one band that I loved more than any of the others was Poison. Bret Michaels was the be all and end all in my book, though Jon Bon Jovi ran a very close second.
I remember one year I was home from school with pinkeye on the day that "Open Up and Say Ahh" was released. I was so upset that I wasn't going to be able to get the album on that first day, so my mom went first thing in the morning and got it for me. I had already listened and memorized the songs by the time the rest of my friends picked up the album after school. Thanks, Mom!
But, I wasn't the only Poison fan in my school. Nope, there were quite a few of us. We were so crazy; we used to throw a Bret Michaels birthday party every year on his birthday, which I still remember as being March 15. We would wear our Poison shirts, play Poison music, and have the decorations and birthday cake in black and bright green, Poison's colors.

So in honor of Bret's upcoming birthday, I made myself a Poison crocheted hook case.

I knew all those years of me perfecting the Poison logo would pay off someday! :)

"Wildcats" football cupcake pattern
Remember the movie, Wildcats, with Goldie Hawn and a very young Wesley Snipes? Well, today we'll be making "Wildcats" football cupcakes. I have to admit, I actually made this template for the Steelers and the Super Bowl, but that's okay. I works for the '80s too!

Materials
chocolate cake mix
oval or football shape cupcake pan (I got mine at Walmart)
powdered sugar
strainer
1 piece of cardstock paper
exacto knife or scissors
Instructions
1. Make chocolate cake mix as instruction on box. Pour cake mix into lightly greased football molds. Bake according to instructions.
2. Let cupcakes cool completely. Run knife along edges and bottom of cupcakes and pop out each football cupcake.
3. Trace football shape onto cardstock and cut out to match the the size of your cupcake. I placed my cupcake directly onto the cardstock and traced around the edges for the shape (3-1/2 in. length x 2 in. wide).

4. Draw football stitching onto template and cut out using an exacto knife or scissors.
5. Place cardstock football shape onto the top of the cupcake.

6. Using a strainer with a small amount of powdered sugar, lightly tap powdered sugar over template.

7. Take your fork, and enjoy your football treat!

Pretty in Pink on Polyvore
Ever see those really cool collages on people's blogs and wonder how they did it? Well, I came across the website this weekend. It is called Polyvore and it is awesome. It has all kinds of items you can add to your collage: clothes, accessories, music, and even words.
I decided to make one for the '80s. So here is mine. . .

Pretty in Pink - by Crafting with Cat Hair on Polyvore.com
I still have a long way to go on my collages. I have a problem putting items on top of one another. I know that is what a collage is all about, but mine all have to be placed just right. I'll keep working on it. In the meantime, swing by the site and give it a try. It really is a lot of fun!

Neo Maxi Zoom Dweebie
Dear Mr. Vernon,
We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it is we did wrong, but we think you're crazy for making us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us, in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out, is that each one of us is. . .
a brain

and an athlete

and a basket case

a princess

and a criminal.

Does that answer your question?
Sincerely yours,
The Breakfast Club
I got the idea for this craft from Pimp Stitch's Breakfast Club pattern set. I tried to choose an appropriately embroidered breakfast food for each character. The following was my thought process:
- I first thought of Bender "a criminal" as a piece of bacon, 'cause bacon is tough!
- The syrup bottle was so sweet and feminine, so I thought of Claire "a princess".
- Brian "a brain" as milk was pretty easy, because milk reminds me of a geeky drink.
- I really wanted to make a sticky bun for Andy "an athlete", but a hot cross bun was just as good. You remember why he was in detention, right?
- And Allison "a basket case" had to be a frosted flake, because of her scalp problem.
So that was it! If you want to embroider Claire or Bender, pick up Pimp Stitch's Breakfast Club patterns. The other three (Brian, Andy, and Allison) are all patterns I came up with.

Lost '80s Item
I'm sure if you were a kid in the '80s you took some portion of your lunch in a piece of Tupperware. I know Tupperware was a staple in my house, and still is to this day. The Glad and Ziplock containers are nothing like a good, sturdy piece of Tupperware.
I don't recall my mother ever selling Tupperware, but I am sure she attended Tupperware parties in the '80s. They were all the rage. And I'm sure that is where she picked me up my very own Tupperware set, like this one:

I bet if I checked in my bag of Barbies and Legos I would find various pieces of this set. My sister, cousin, and I would take the pieces out and make mud and onion pies in my front yard. Ahh, good times.
After 25+ years the thing is still as good as new!

Crafting with a little less cat hair

Well, I feared this day may come, though I had hoped it never would. I found Desdemona's owners, and on Valentine's Day, just another reason to hate Valentine's Day.
I won't go into all the details, but they had been looking for Desdemona or Mica, her real name, which means "little one" in Romanian for two months. They were so excited to see her! The woman hugged me and started to cry when she picked Desdemona up. I am glad that they got her back, as they were really nice people, but Drusilla and I are going to miss her lots.
We're going to take some time to think about whether or not we'll be getting another little girl, so in the meantime it's just going to be the two of us. For now, we'll be spending the rest of the weekend drowning ourselves in ice cream and salmon treats!

In and Out of Love
I am definitely not a fan of Valentine's Day, never have been and probably never will be. I am just not into candy, flowers, jewelry, etc. It's just not my style. Okay, maybe an occasional piece of candy. :)
These earrings I named "In and Out of Love" after one of my favorite Bon Jovi songs. I thought the red (in love) and the black (out of love) worked well and I just love the black hearts. I still have a few left over that I am trying to decide what to do with them.
The second pair of earrings will be coming up in two weeks along with a tutorial, so you can make a set for your own '80s fan!
A few months back I made a couple of sets of earrings and aptly titled them after the '80s. I figured I'd share them with you now since we are celebrating the '80s! Here is the first set:

It's not all about the '80s, but it is about the blog
I'd like to take a minute from the '80s to say a thank you for letting me vent yesterday. I hate to bring my political views onto this blog, so I will try and refrain as much as possible, unless it is through my crafts! My old Ravelry group asked that I come up with an American inspired crochet pattern, and I am still intending to do that pattern. I'm thinking of posting it around the 4th of July. So, stay tuned for that and maybe a few more Republican elephant crafts too :)
I also wanted to point out a few new things on my blog. As you have probably noticed my blogroll has gotten larger. I have been following many blogs through the "Follow This Blog" Widget on Blogger. Instead of keeping them all secret I decided to share their sites with you. I will continue to add links, so when you have a few minutes be sure to take a peek at their wonderful sites.
Another new item that has been added is a link to my craft bookstore, The Cat's Meow, that I opened through Amazon.com. The link is in a box at the bottom of the blog. It is nothing fancy, I just offer up some suggestions on great craft books.
If you'd like to open your own bookstore, check out the Amazon Associates aStore link. It is a pretty cool idea. All of these orders are processed and shipped through Amazon.com., so you don't have to do a thing other than choose the items to be displayed. I like it too, because it keeps a list of the craft books I want to buy!
Also, I've added a 2009 craft list to my navigation bar. This list will continue to be updated as I finish projects or come across new projects I want to tackle. I've added links to all the projects I could, in case you'd like to craft them too. I lost track of all of my crafts I did last year, so this list will be great to look at in December, and to see how many crafts I actually finished!
The final new item is probably the biggest. I am closing down my Crafts by Alice (CBA) Etsy shop and am opening a new Etsy shop. This was one of the hardest decisions that I've had to make in my crafting career, which has only been about three years, but it was still hard. I loved the shop, but with the impending decision on the Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) and a few other reasons I thought it best to shut down the shop and start fresh. I will still have a section titled, Alice's Tea Party, that will feature a lot of the old CBA items, or at least until I hear about the CPSIA decision.
The new shop is called, Missie Zee. It is still in the works, especially what will be offered in the shop, but the site is now up and running. You can find the link under "My Shop" on the navigation bar. I am really pleased with the way it turned out. It is the very first site I designed 100%. I like the bright and cheerful colors, and it offers up a look into my crafting past and future. I hope you'll take a second to swing by and give it a look.
Even though the site is up and running, the shop is not. I have decided to take my time adding crafts for sale. I think I'll start selling again in the fall, but maybe not. We'll see how inspired I get, as many of the items will be one of a kind (OOAK).
One final piece of news. I wanted to give a quick update on how my girls are doing. They are getting along great, except for the occasional rough house session. They took a nap next to each other this past weekend.
This is the closest they've gotten in a month. I am happy, we now have peace in the house! Please forgive my wrinkled tablecloth and crazy looking table. My big project this year is buying a table and chair set at a thrift shop and refurbishing them. It can't be as bad as my deck project of last year, right?
I hope you are all enjoying the '80s craft-a-long. I've got some pretty funny '80s crafts coming up in the next few weeks, including something "breakfast" related and a some bloody good Lost Boys goodies! Stay excellent!

You've disappointed me, Ravelry
I never want this blog to be anything other than fun, crafty posts. So, I have decided to forgo posting what I had originally written about this situation. But what I will say is that Ravelry has completely disappointed me. Why? They are shutting down my Conservative/Republican knitting and crocheting group, The Bunker.
This wouldn't bother me one bit if they decided to shut down all political groups, I mean it is a craft site after all, but this is not the case. Nope, only our Conservative/Republican one.
So to you Ravelry, I will be taking some time off from your site until I decide whether or not I want to continue crafting with you. I fear your actions are only the beginning. "Change" is here, and it is in the form of censorship.
Call Me!

Remember the super cute E.T. address book tutorial The Spotted Sparrow posted a few weeks ago? Need a reminder? You can see part one here and part two here. Well, I finally got around to making one of my very own.
Since I am not a huge fan of E.T., I decided to opt for a music themed address book instead. I followed the instructions for the inside of the book almost 100% (math is not my strong suit, so it didn't turn out exactly right). I then used pink, black, and white construction paper for the phone and title of my address book.
I like it and it will be a perfect addition to my pink and green kitchen.

Madonna pearl bracelet tutorial
By now you have probably realized that I was obsessed with Madonna, as I think almost every girl was in the '80s. She was so amazing with her songs, videos, and clothing styles, and set the standard for all of the other female singers in the '80s and later.

Madonna had so many of her clothing styles copied by girls of all ages from her mesh shirts to her platinum blonde hair, but one of my favorites were her pearl bracelets that she wore over her lacy, fingerless gloves.

She was so cool!
Here is a super simple tutorial to make your very own Madonna pearl bracelet.
Materials
wire cutter
round nose pliers
flat nose pliers
Instructions
1. Using wire cutter, clip off 4-1/4 loops of memory wire.
2. With round and flat nose pliers, loop one end into a simple loop. Squeeze loop closed so pearls do not fall off.
3. Thread pearls onto the length of the wire. I used the smaller beads on my bracelet.
4. Bend a simple loop onto the end.
Rock on, Material Girl!

Kiss Me Deadly
I love Dabbled's Anti-Valentine's Day contest. I always have so much fun trying to decide what sinister, anti-valentine type item to craft. This year I combined both the sinister and the '80s.

Here is my "Kiss Me Deadly" poisonous lipstick with an embroidered evidence tag.
I figure who better to try and kill someone with their kiss than Lita Ford!
The lipstick was pretty simple to construct, but the tag was a lot more difficult. I'll be giving a tutorial on how to construct your own evidence tag in a couple of weeks.

Lost '80s Item
The '80s produced many fashion disasters, but one that I think was totally unnecessary and pretty painful was the banana clip. Do you remember these?

Ugh! I remember I used to ear them when I had a perm, which was crazy because the ringlets would get caught in the clasp. Plus, it never fit my head right and would poke me in the base of my skull. Oh, the things I did for fashion!
I really thought these things were gone, or so I had wished, but I actually found a few stores that still sell them, like Walmart. Their colors are very neutral, but they are still the same banana clips as I wore in the '80s.
Several online store also sell them like coveryourhair and totallyfashiontrendy, which sells '80s neon ones in case you want to order a few. Just be sure to keep a couple of aspirin near by.

'80s craft-a-long in full swing
Well, the '80s craft-a-long is in full swing. We are coming up to the halfway point soon. Where has the time gone?
The second half of the craft-a-long features some crafts that have required a lot more time than I anticipated. I'm actually still working on several for next week. Having said that, there might not be a new craft every day. I'm thinking three a week. We'll have to see how it goes.
Also, in non '80s related news, I am working on a baby afghan for my best friend's baby shower next month. As you can see on the progress bar, I am only 5% done. Not good!
And just yesterday, I was asked by both the NCIS and The Bunker Ravelry groups to come up with a crochet pattern for an upcoming CAL/KAL.
Whew! I'm am one busy girl. Not sure how I'm going to accomplish all of this in such a short time, but I am up for the challenge.
So no craft for today. Instead, here are a few blasts from the past. . . creative and crafty toys from the '80s. I think I had all of them :)

Album cover coasters
I have so many fond memories of my records and my record player, like putting on my headset and cranking up the tunes while playing on my PC jr.!

I saw this really cool coaster tutorial on The Spotted Sparrow and I knew I had to give it a try. And when I was trying to come up with different kinds of crafts for the craft-a-long I remembered this tutorial and decided I would immortalize some of my favorite '80s album covers on coasters.
So here they are:
Belinda - Belinda Carlisle
Beauty and the Beat - The Go-Gos
Like a Prayer - Madonna
The Best of Berlin - Berlin

Like A Prayer turned out the best, and rightfully so. It is my favorite album of all time, and the one I would want with me if I was stuck on a deserted island, that and maybe Concrete Blonde's Bloodletting too!
Anyway, the project was really a lot easier than I anticipated. I just scanned my CD covers into my computer and printed them out the size of the tile. I then followed the instructions on the tutorial. They did curl up a little, so next time I think I need more Mod Podge underneath the pictures, but other than that they turned out pretty cool!
I really wanted to include Duran Duran's Rio and Bananarama's True Confessions, since those were two of my absolute favorite '80s albums, but I couldn't find my CDs. Maybe I'll add them to my coasters the next time I get up in my attic. :)

New Look
Well, as you can see I finally got around to changing my blog to something that is much easier to read. And doncha just love the new banner? Jennisa from Once Upon A Blog designed it for me, she did such a super job, as well as my very own button. It's on the sidebar along with my dozens of other things. Once the craft-a-long is over the sidebar and everything else will get back to normal.
Anyway, hope everything is a whole lot easier to read now! Oh, and I promise to take "We Are the Champions" off the blog soon. Just give me a few more days to relish in our Super Bowl victory!!!

Mr. Mom "Woobie" Blanket Tutorial
One of my favorite movies from the '80s is Mr. Mom. I just love Michael Keaton!

There are so many hilarious scenes in this movie, but the one that stands out to me is the scene when the vacuum cleaner attacks the kids and eats the one kid's blanket, or his woobie.
I am sure you have seen this pattern before, but here it is again. You can use this super simple, no sew pattern to make your very own woobie for your child or, like I did, your pet!

Materials
1-1/2 yards of fleece material in both fabrics (one solid and one pattern)
scissors or rotary cutter
ruler
Instructions
- Trim edges of fabric to remove fabric fray.
- Place the two pieces of fleece (solid and pattern) on top of each other and cut a 5" square from each of the four corners of the fleece.
- Using your ruler and scissors or rotary cutter cut fringe that is 1" wide and 5" inches deep on all sides of the blanket.
- Tie the front and back fringe together using an overhand knot, making sure the knots are not too tight.
- You now have your very own woobie!

Cool Rider
Singing in the Rain; Bye, Bye Birdie; Grease 2! Grease 2? Yes, in my world, these three musicals are the bet musicals of all time.
I know a lot of people think Grease 2 pales in comparison to the original Grease, but I have to disagree. While I enjoy the songs in Grease, I think the movie is a little long, at least for me. I have a very short attention span when it comes to movies, anything over an hour and thirty minutes is too long. Plus, I like comedies more than dramas. Grease 2 was certainly funnier than the first Grease. I mean, "Let's Do it for Our Country", that is just too funny.
After seeing Grease 2 for the first time I immediately wanted to become a Pink Lady. I loved their clothes, their pink car, and especially their pink jackets. My favorite part of the movie is when Stephanie Zanoni (Michelle Pfeiffer) sings "Cool Rider" and turns her pink lady jacket inside out to reveal a reversible black satin jacket. That was just too cool!
Since I never had a really cool pink and black satin Pink Lady jacket, I decided to make myself a Pink Lady item.
Here it is! My very own Pink Lady eyeglass case.
The case is made out of black satin fabric remnants and pink and white felt. It is not reversible, but the inside of the case is pink felt!
The sunglasses pattern is from Pimp Stitch's Made in the '80s embroidery pattern. For the sunglasses, I cut the pattern out of felt pieces, sewed the felt on the satin, and embroidered the glass lines and pink beads to the felt. I then stitched the ends together for my very own "Pink Lady"eyeglass case.

Lost '80s Item

Did you have one of these '80s plastic charm necklaces? I did!
This one isn't mine, but it does have many of the charms I had: baseball bat, lipstick tube, toothpaste, anchor, cat, headphones, notebook, baby bottle, tennis racket, umbrella, and whistle. I also had a harmonica, roller skate, piano, coke bottle, and some others I can't remember.
I used to trade the charms with my friends until I got the ones I wanted. I never got the record though :(
